Island guide

Renting a bike, kayak or golf cart on Amelia Island

Ask whether they deliver to where you are staying, and be specific about it, because on this island that word covers four different arrangements. Some will bring a bike, a cart or a chair to your hotel at no charge and collect it at the end of the week. Some charge for the run. Some deliver only to the water, so you still have to get yourself to a boat ramp that may be off the island. And some do not deliver at all and will meet you at the launch. That is worth settling before you compare day rates, and it is the one question the day rate never answers.

Make the shops come to you

Tell Amelia what you want and where you are staying, and she will work out what suits and who can reach you, then pass it to the island's rental shops so they come back with availability and their own prices.

Grouped by what each one is mainly described as renting. Several rent across more than one group, so a place listed under bikes may well have a kayak too — worth asking rather than ringing twice.

Bikes and e-bikes

Cruisers for the beach path, e-bikes if you would rather not fight the wind on the way home.

  1. Amelia Island Board Rentals

motorized skateboard and scooter rentals3-wheel Arcimoto rentals

The name is misleading: what they actually rent from 401 S 8th Street is the Arcimoto FUV, a small electric open-air two-seater, along with a guided FUV tour and short guided beach rides. Skateboards came off the downtown tour in 2023 and that tour is scooters only, minimum age 14; younger children are limited to the beach rides. The beach rides leave from Burney Beach Park rather than the 8th Street address, so do not turn up at the shop for one.

Bike shop renting by the hour, the day or the week, which is unusual here where most hire is by the day. Firmstrong beach cruisers, and they sell and service bikes as well. They offer roadside assistance by phone if something goes wrong out on the trail. No street address is published on their own site, so call before setting out.

Helmets, locks and storage bags come with the bike rather than costing extra, and a card is needed for any rental. Free delivery on the island, but only on three-day and weekly bookings, and that offer is made on their bike rentals rather than the boards.

Golf carts and street-legal buggies

Street-legal carts are how a good number of people get around here. Ask what the rate covers and where you are allowed to drive it.

  1. Roadshark Powersports

    scooter rentalsgolf-cart rentals

Street-legal golf carts and folding e-bikes from 515 S 8th Street. Delivery is offered on the cart hire at $25 each way. Carts need a driver's license, age 21 and a deposit; safety gear comes with the e-bikes. Rentals run every day even though the storefront itself is shut Sunday and Monday, so the shop being closed does not mean you cannot get a cart.

On the water

Kayaks, paddleboards, surfboards and boats. Several of these run guided trips as well as simply handing you the gear.

  1. Riptide Watersports

kayak & SUP toursprivate boat toursbike tours & rentalsgear rentals

Beach chairs and umbrellas, bikes and e-bikes, surfboards, bodyboards and paddleboards, from 5012 First Coast Highway. They deliver to your hotel or rental at no charge, dropping off between 10am and noon and collecting between 8 and 10 on your last morning, and they will set chairs and umbrellas up on the beach for you. A day's bike hire is a full 24 hours from when you get it, not a calendar day, and child seats and trailers are available. Kayaks are listed but shown as temporarily unavailable, so ask before counting on one.

  2. Amelia Adventures

kayak and SUP tourskayak and paddleboard rentals

Kayak and paddleboard rentals booked through 432 S 8th Street. Worth knowing before you book: the kayak gear is delivered to the water rather than to your hotel, and the meeting point is a boat ramp off the island on S.R. 200 in Yulee, with morning launches at 9am. It is a scheduled slot rather than a walk-up hire, takes a per-person deposit, and the booking is reviewed rather than instantly confirmed.

  3. Adventures Up the Creek

    kayak rentalspaddling trips

Kayak and paddleboard rentals with a shuttle that drops the boats off and collects them, though the shuttle costs extra rather than being free. Two things to check first: the published rates are for their St. Marys, Georgia base rather than an Amelia Island counter, and they screen renters on experience, including a self-rescue requirement, so this is not a walk-up hire for a complete beginner. A deposit and a signed waiver are needed before launching.

  4. Amelia Island Paddle Surf Company

    paddleboard rentals and lessons

Paddleboard rentals by the half day or full day out of 1630 Scott Road, along with lessons, ocean paddles, eco tours and paddleboard yoga. They deliver and collect the boards, and will drop them at a beach access point or at the address you are staying. If they do not pick up the phone it does not mean they are closed, it usually means they are on the water.

  5. Amelia Surf Co.

    surfboard and SUP rentalssurf lessons

Surfboards, bodyboards, skimboards and paddleboards from 2022 1st Ave at the corner of Sadler Road, for anything from two hours to a full week. No reservations, so it is first come first served, and availability has to be checked by phone or email rather than booked online. They run lessons and multi-day summer camps as well. Hours run longer in summer, from Memorial Day.

  6. Driftwood Surf Shop

    surfboard and SUP rentalsbeach gear

Surf shop at 31 S Fletcher Ave renting surfboards from beginner soft-tops to short boards, plus paddleboards, bodyboards and beach chairs. Staff size the board to what you can actually do rather than handing over whatever is nearest, and paddleboards come with paddle, leash and the required PFD. Every category carries a deposit and the paddleboard one is steep, so ask what it is when you book. Booking is by phone or in person only. They also publish a local surf report, which is worth a look before you decide to rent a board at all.

  7. Paddle Jax Amelia

    kayak rentals

Kayaks only, guided and self-guided, running since 2010 under this name and previously as Amelia Island Adventures. Self-guided renters get an app to follow; guided trips go out with a certified naturalist. Based in Yulee, and rather than delivering to where you are staying they meet you at the launch for your trip, so you will need to get yourself there. There is a minimum age, which rules out the youngest children.

  8. PADL — Amelia & Talbot

    self-serve kayak and SUP stations

Self-serve paddleboards, kayaks and bikes unlocked from a station with a phone app, part of a Florida-wide chain rather than a local outfit. Worth being clear on where it actually is: the station sits on Big Talbot Island at 13030 Heckscher Drive, which is Jacksonville and across the water, not on Amelia Island. Park hours are sunrise to sunset and there is a last-rental cutoff, and they suggest riding within a couple of hours of high tide.
