Handyman on Amelia Island

A handyman is who you call for the household list that never gets shorter: the screen door, the loose railing, the shelves still in the box, the television waiting on its bracket. Most of the handymen covering the island are based in Fernandina Beach or Yulee, and a few of them say they work around the clock. Florida has no handyman license, so nothing about the job is settled by a license number.

Worth knowing before you book

Ask two things before anyone comes out: whether they carry liability insurance, and whether they price by the hour or by the job. Get both answers in writing. Florida doesn't issue a handyman license, so there is no license number to check, and those two answers are what you check instead.

Send the whole list at once, with a photo of each job and the days someone is home, so it can be priced and done as one visit. Say which jobs can wait and which can't; a door that won't latch and a shelf still in its box are not the same call.

Ask what the price includes: materials, haul-away, and whether a second visit costs a second trip. A quote that names those is one you can compare with the next.

Common questions

Does a handyman need a license in Florida?
No. State law names handyman services among the job scopes no state or local license can be required for, which is why there is no number to ask for. The license lines are drawn around the trades: electrical work of any size, plumbing that connects to the water lines, roofing and structural work each need a licensed contractor, whoever is holding the tool.
What can a handyman do, and what needs a licensed trade?
Wiring, including a hardwired fan or fixture, plumbing tied into the water lines, roofing and anything structural need a licensed electrician, plumber, roofer or contractor. The rest of the household list, hanging and mounting, drywall patches, caulk, screens, deck boards, painting, flooring, cabinets and tile, is what a handyman is for.
Where are they based?
Fernandina Beach, on the island, and Yulee, across the bridge on the mainland; the Yulee companies give the island or the county as their range.
