Eleven companies cover the island now, and the first thing worth knowing is that only five of them are based in the county. Two of those five are called Turner and they are separate businesses, so treat them as two calls. The rest run the island out of Jacksonville and the beaches, which is no mark against them at two in the morning so long as you know that is what you are calling. Most do emergency work and several answer around the clock. Past that, sort them by the problem rather than by who is nearest. A burst pipe at midnight is the around-the-clock group. A bathroom you are pricing rather than bleeding through is a different call, and one of them does remodel plumbing with free estimates. One names slab leaks, which is worth more here than in most places: a lot of island houses sit on slab, and the first sign is usually a warm patch of floor or a water bill that makes no sense. One also does septic, which matters west of town where the sewer does not reach. The oldest cites three generations and fifty years. One of the Jacksonville companies lists Yulee and Callahan on its own map rather than the island itself, so ask before you count on it.
